Where is it? Built on the foothills of Mount Olympus, overlooking the seaside town of Platamonas.

A perfect short trip from Stomio, Platamonas, or Neos Panteleimonas.

A Brief History. Built in the 10th century by the Byzantines. Controlled by Franks & Ottomans over the centuries. Key military stronghold due to its strategic location. Used even during World War II as a defense point!. Monastery of Saint Demetrios, Karitsa. A Spiritual & Historical Oasis in the Heart of Pieria

Location. Nestled on the eastern slopes of Mount Ossa (Όσσα), amidst lush greenery near Stomio. Accessible via the Velika–Stomio or Tempi–Velika roads, located just outside the village of Karitsa Historical Background Dedicated to Saint Demetrios. the monastery has been a focal point of local faith and tradition. Originally, villagers built a small icon shrine which evolved into a modest church by 1872, designed as a basilica with a wood-carved iconostasis and late 19th-century icons . As Karitsa expanded, the present Byzantine-style cross-shaped church with dome was constructed between 1976–1980. It features three aisles supported by eight pillars and two tall bell towers at the front and rear . Feast day: October 26, celebrating Saint Demetrios as the village’s patron.

Monastery of Panagia. Kokkino Nero Tranquility & Faith by the Red Waters

Location. Above the seaside village of Kokkino Nero in eastern Thessaly, surrounded by plane trees and healing red-tinted springs.

History. Built in 1951, dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Panagia). Houses a miraculous icon and serves as a key pilgrimage site for the local Pontian community. Located near natural mineral springs known since antiquity.

Calypso Gorge. A Hidden Green Paradise with Aegean Views Where is it? Nestled on the eastern slopes of Mount Kissavos (Ossa), just above Kokkino Nero and near Karitsa in Larissa, it’s easily accessible via marked trails from the red-water village.

Highlights. A lush canyon carved into the mountain, full of pristine emerald pools and waterfalls . The main highlight is a dramatic 70 m waterfall flowing into a crystal-clear lake—visible from the canyon’s dramatic cliff edges . Multiple smaller cascades, natural slides, and refreshing plunge pools—ideal for canyoning and adventure seekers.

Activities & Access. Canyoning & trekking: Guided tours last around 4–5 hours, suitable for those aged 6+ and moderately fit. Prices range €40 for trekking and ~€55 for canyoning . Trail starts near Kokkino Nero or Karitsa, requires a 30–45 min uphill hike through dense beech and chestnut forest.

Pineios River Delta. A Protected Natural Haven by the Aegean Sea Where is it? Situated just south of Stomio, where the Pineios River meets the Aegean Sea, the delta is part of the wider Tempi Valley ecosystem. Easily accessible by car or bike, it’s only a few minutes from our accommodations in Stomio. Highlights. This coastal wetland is one of Greece’s most important natural habitats. The delta spans lagoons, reed beds, and river channels, creating a vibrant ecosystem home to over 200 species of birds—including herons, flamingos, and cormorants—especially during migration seasons. The landscape is tranquil and open, with views of both river and sea, and occasional glimpses of Mount Olympus in the background.

Activities & Access. Ideal for birdwatching, photography, and quiet nature walks. The area includes dirt paths and levees suitable for cycling or easy walking. No entrance fee is required. Arioprino Forest, Karitsa

Arioprino Forest, Karitsa. A Mythical Chestnut Grove Hidden in the Slopes of Kissavos Where is it? Tucked away above the village of Karitsa, on the eastern side of Mount Kissavos, Arioprinos is about a 25-minute drive from Stomio. Accessible by forest road or hiking trail, it’s a peaceful mountain retreat with sweeping views of the Aegean Sea.

Highlights. Arioprino is a centuries-old chestnut forest with towering trees, moss-covered stones, and natural clearings that feel almost enchanted. The area is steeped in local legends and folklore, adding a mystical charm to its natural beauty. In autumn, the forest comes alive with golden colors and the scent of chestnuts, while spring brings blooming wildflowers and fresh mountain air.

Activities & Access. Perfect for hiking, forest bathing, and nature picnics. Several marked trails pass through Arioprinos, suitable for all skill levels.
